Unitywater owns and manages Yandina Creek Wetland (YCW) for the main purpose of improving water quality within the Maroochy River Catchment.
To continue to manage and maintain the site and recreational access, we are applying to the state government for a Ministerial Infrastructure Designation (MID). Receiving a MID will help Unitywater manage and maintain the site in a timely, effective, and environmentally responsible way.
The Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning (DSDILGP) manages assessment and approval of MID applications.
We are seeking feedback from neighbouring property owners and community stakeholders to inform our MID application.
What is Unitywater’s MID proposal?
The MID proposal is for the construction of new access and recreation facilities and ongoing upgrade and maintenance works to existing infrastructure to help Unitywater manage and maintain the site in a timely, effective, and environmentally responsible way.
Typical works include:
Upgrade activities including the upgrade of existing tracks to extend pedestrian walking trails, construction of vehicle turn around points, raising vehicle tracks for flood resilience, construction of light vehicle bridges and modification or removal of existing tidal gates.
Maintenance activities including weed control, pest control, general track maintenance, tidal gate maintenance, bird viewing infrastructure maintenance, maintenance of drainage lines and internal waterways, fire management and culvert repairs.
Construction activities including construction of a new shed for storage of maintenance equipment and potential new bird viewing infrastructure.
Community Engagement
Unitywater has undertaken two rounds of community engagement for the MID application in accordance with ministerial guidelines – the first in late 2022 and the most recent which concluded on 26 February 2024.
The Department of State Development and Infrastructure (formerly DSDILGP) manages assessment and approval of MID applications. The Department will now work with Unitywater to review engagement feedback and modify parts of the MID application as needed.
Unitywater is expecting a decision by the Minister in late 2024. A link to the decision will be provided when available.
