What is an ORG?

An ORG is an Overflow Relief Gully. The ORG looks like a grate and can be found on the ground outside your home, within your property boundary.

It is a critical part of your property’s plumbing because it is designed to prevent your house flooding with sewage.

In the event of a sewer blockage or surcharge, the cover of the ORG should either pop off or pop upwards to release excess pressure and direct sewage away from your home.

What is an ORG cap, and how does it work?

An ORG Cap, also known as an overflow relief cap or overflow relief cap device, is a device that sits within an ORG.

The cap works by creating a water-tight seal to prevent the ingress of rain into the wastewater network.

In the event of a surcharge, the ORG Cap will eject to release excess pressure and direct sewage away from your home, just like with a conventional ORG.

How does an ORG Cap reduce the risk of wet-weather overflows?

Wet weather overflows are caused by excessive rainwater entering the sewer network.

ORG Caps help to reduce the risk of overflows by preventing rainwater from entering the wastewater network via the ORG opening.

How will the ORG Cap be installed?

ORG Caps will be installed by licensed plumbers working on behalf of Unitywater. The ORG Caps will be fitted into your property’s existing ORG.

How have properties been selected for this program?

Properties were selected based on flood mapping data and the possibility of the ORG becoming submerged during wet weather.

Will this program be extended to other areas?

These installations are initially targeted to the Battery Hill catchment due to the history of flooding and wet weather overflows in this area. Unitywater will consider extending this to other areas in future if a need arises.
