FAQs
How can an artwork deter graffiti?
Utilities and councils throughout Australia and overseas install public artworks as a graffiti-prevention strategy on the basis that graffiti offenders are less likely to tag or deface an artwork, particularly when they have been involved in its creation.
Our artworks are designed and installed by not-for-profit agencies that specialise in creating painted works of art with well-known street artists. As a result, the artworks often gain wider respect amongst the graffiti community and are less likely to be tagged again.
How is each design developed?
Unitywater proactively engages with neighbours and the community that surround the particular reservoir, water tower or pump station.
The aim of this is to ensure our designs reflect the local identity and community values where the artwork is located. This includes understanding the themes, styles and types of artwork the local community would like to see in the final design.
A concept is developed to incorporate the feedback from the community.
How is the final design chosen?
The final artwork is chosen by a design selection panel. This consists of community members who have expressed an interest in having a say on the final design, and key stakeholders.
Once the design selection panel have approved the design, it is painted on the reservoir, water tower or pump station.
Who designs and installs the artwork?
Unitywater engages specialised art agencies to design and install our artworks.

Why are you renewing Point Cartwright?
Unitywater has started an artwork trail renewal program to ensure the longevity of artwork and our infrastructure for future generations. The Point Cartwright artwork will be refreshed after weathering the conditions of salt spray, sun exposure and high winds.
Will you be involving local artists in the transformation?
Unitywater is committed to involving and supporting local artists whenever possible. Local artists are encouraged to suggest ideas in the development of the design concepts.
Unitywater has a long and established relationship with the team that delivers our artwork program to the specifications of our infrastructure and ensure the final designs reflect the local community’s values.
When was the mural completed and why has it weathered so quickly?
The mural was completed in 2016 and due to the exposure to the elements from the sea and air, the artwork has begun to weather and requires a renewal.
Won’t painting it again cause the same problems?
There have been significant advances in the preparation process and the type of paint used on these large structures. However, we understand the community may be concerned about painting the reservoir again, so we are asking for their ideas on artwork designs. This includes installing public art, like sculptures, around the water reservoir.
How much did the original painting cost and how to much will it cost to repair?
Unitywater has a dedicated Community Program that gives back to the local communities where we operate. The artwork program is fully funded by this program.
