Support our community through our volunteer program

About uVolunteer

As part of our commitment to supporting our communities we encourage team member to volunteer in their community. You can volunteer as a team or individually.

Every team member in our organisation can access one day of volunteer time each calendar year to participate in and support a meaningful cause.

Current opportunities

There are currently no volunteer activities with our community groups and partners so we urge you and your teams to support a cause you're passionate about and organise this activity by yourselves.

We encourage you to contact the community group, work out how they might need some help and organise the day and time to attend.

For example, you may want to rally a team up to support your child's community soccer team by painting a club room or you might want to get volunteers to assist a sausage sizzle to raise funds for a not for profit community group that's important to you.

uVolunteer steps:

1. Ensure the volunteer initiative supports the communities we serve in Moreton Bay, Noosa or Sunshine Coast.

2. Please gain your leader's approval.

3. Contact the community group, work out how they might need help and arrange the day and time to attend.

3. Record your volunteer hours in Tech One under volunteer leave.

4. A risk assessment will need to be completed prior to the event and added to Intelex (the community or safety team will guide you on this)

5. If the event involves working with children, a Blue Card will be required (see FAQs on the right)

6. Reach out to the Community team if you need a uVolunteer t-shirt at community@unitywater.com.

7. Have fun and take photos of the team to help us encourage more people to get involved. Send them to community@unitywater.com and we can add them to this page.

Using your skills

Often community groups need help with building capabilities, our people (you) have some amazing skills and expertise that you can share with these groups. Ranging from:

  • Our people services teams providing support with vulnerable people finding employment through writing a good resume, or sharing interview advice.
  • Our communications and engagement team might help an organisation write strong grant applications, or provide advice on sharing their story through helping develop a social media strategy.
  • A person or a team in our organisation may have awesome excel skills and might like to run an excel skills drop in session at the local Men's Shed...the list goes on.
  • You might be into sport, crafts, baking or gardening, there may be a refuge or a group looking for someone to share these skills with them.

by tamsyn.strange, almost 2 years ago

On Monday 19 December, the Emerging Communities team volunteered at Redcliffe Breakfast Club (RBC).

The day consisted of helping RBC with the distribution of their christmas hampers to those in need. The RBC serves more than 1000 meals each month, supporting the homeless, or those who are on low or fixed incomes.

  • Volunteering Day at Sunshine Butterflies

by tamsyn.strange, almost 2 years ago

On Monday 28 November we had our EPMO Volunteering Day at Sunshine Butterflies.

We had a lovely time making poke bowls and bliss balls with the participants, as well as taking at look at their I.T program.

We were lucky enough to have a look around the beautiful farm and see lots of different animals including horses/ ponies, peacocks, sheep, goats and lovely farm dogs.

It was really nice to see all the smiles on the participants faces, from such a lovely organisation that is able to run these incredible day programs.

  • Card making with the Pyjama Foundation

by tamsyn.strange, about 2 years ago

On Thursday 8th September, my colleagues and I from the Maud Street and King Street offices spent a few hours creating cards for children in foster care - thanks to professional card maker and volunteer, Janette.

Janette helped us with the designs and provided the materials to ensure we were all successful in making cards for children of all ages. Unitywater volunteers included groups of people working in development Services, Legal, Finance, HR and Community Engagement - we all had differing creative abilities when it came to producing the cards and Janette kept us on the straight and narrow!

  • Reconnect at Redcliffe Breakfast Club

On Thursday 4 August, I joined my colleagues Kim and Andrew at the Redcliffe Breakfast Club to support Reconnect- an event hosted by the Moreton Bay Housing and Homelessness Network.

Roughly 350 people attended the free community event, which saw a variety of service providers come together to share information and support the community's most vulnerable. A range of practical services and activities were also on offer- including a free brekky, immunisations and haircuts.

Our main role on the day was to support the mindfulness station- a quiet space at the event for people to relax and take it easy... Continue reading
