To ensure that we continue to deliver safe and reliable wastewater services that meet our community’s needs, Unitywater is undertaking essential renewal and maintenance works at the Noosa Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The works to this existing infrastructure will improve the capacity for service during wet weather events in the Noosa region and ensure long-term wastewater service delivery to the local community.
About the project
The Noosa Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Upgrade project will include:
Renewal of the Bioreactor Aeration System.
Construction and installation of a new ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system.
Construction of a new Switchroom and Main Switchboard to improve reliability, and support future upgrades.
Control system upgrades to modernise plant automation and improve operational responsiveness.
General improvements across the site, including electrical, civil, access and safety upgrades to support the above works.
From late March 2026 to late 2027, our delivery partner Downer and their subcontractors will begin construction. This work will take over 18 months to complete, weather and ground conditions permitting.
Impacts
Intermittent noise, dust, odour and vibration during construction activities.
Increased construction traffic during the work.Please observe all signage, drive to the conditions, and follow the directions of traffic controllers at all times. You may witness an increase in heavy vehicle movements along Wallum Lane and Rotary Way, Noosa Heads.
Vegetation clearing. We understand that local fauna and flora are highly valued by the community. We have conducted extensive environmental investigations and adapted our construction methodology where possible to ensure we are minimising the number of trees / shrubs that are required to be removed. All vegetation clearing will be overseen by a qualified fauna spotter and project arborist. Like for like revegetation works will also be undertaken as part of our restoration works.
Restoration and reinstatement. Landscaping and surface restoration will be completed once work is finalised, ensuring the site is returned as close to its original condition, if not better.
Throughout the delivery of the project, Unitywater, with the support of Downer, will keep the local community informed of progress and any upcoming activities.
