Community Koala Rescue

During Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) works on the Waraba Wastewater Network in Caboolture West, Unitywater and our construction partner, Killard Talli Joint Venture (KTJV), have been careful to ensure the highest levels of safety and lowest possible disturbance to the animals and plants in and around our work sites.
In late April, a member of the local community alert our construction crew to the presence of a koala known to frequent the trees around the worksite. In addition, to the community alert, KTJV also has a dedicated fauna spotter onsite during all drilling activities to safely relocate any animals that may be present in work areas.
As a precautionary measure, all nearby works were immediately stopped so that the crew could ascertain the animal’s safety. Following a thorough assessment, the crew spotted the curious koala in a tree approximately 250m away from the work site and established a designated safe zone around the Koala's tree.
Unitywater and KTJV are very grateful to the community member who assisted in helping to relocate the koala who also received a ‘just in case’ checkup at Australia Zoo that day.
